Wilderness is a coastal village next to the N2 national route in the Western Cape, South Africa, and is part of the Garden Route National park stretching from Wilderness in the West to Tsitsikamma in the East.
The Garden Route is the third most popular tourist destination next to the Kruger National Park and Cape Town. In 1991 the Wilderness Lakes received RAMSAR status as a wetland of international importance and is managed under SAN Parks (South African National Parks). According to the RAMSAR convention it includes the Serpentine River, Island Lake, Langvlei, and Rondevlei.
Each lake is linked by the Touw River that meets the Indian Ocean on the 18km stretch of beach at Wilderness.
The wetlands support over 300 bird species, 285 plant species, various mammal species, and 32 fish species.
The Lakes also play a major role in flood control. The area is known as a holiday destination offering activities such as forests, canoeing, cycling, sailing, surfing, swimming, paragliding, and birding. Wilderness has a temperate climate throughout the year and is located between George and Knysna. George airport is 30km away and is the most assessable National Park in South Africa.
